Energy Viewpoints

We have spent almost two weeks learning about energy resources in class.  Using your background knowledge of these resources please write a comment answering the following question.

Imagine you live in an area that has access to all nine types of energy studied in class.  If you were in charge of choosing the energy resource used by a city in the area, which energy resource would you select?  Please explain why.  In your explanation of why, include two specific pieces of evidence to support your selection and one specific piece of evidence that is an admission of a negative for this type of energy.

  1. I think that hydropower is o f great energy source to choose. Although there are disadvantages to this source it also has many more advantages than disadvantages. Building a dam can cost millions of dollars but the income you get compared to the amount you paid is more. Hydropower is renewable which means it could be used again. Also, it does not pollute the Earth so it is safe for wildlife and humans. In very unlikely scenarios it can damage to habitats by creating an unnatural flow to the river but this can be fixed so it doesn't harm wildlife. This is also one of the most reliable resources and produces the some of the most energy per year. This is why I think that hydropower is the best energy resource.

  2. If I were to choose an energy recourse I would choose solar. I would choose solar because (A) solar will use less natural materials that could potentialy harm humanity and (B) it would help prevent global warming. The negative downfall to this recourse is that if the sun is not shining on a consistent basis then the energy will only last for one to two days determined by the battery size. The bigger the battery the longer and the more energy it can store.

  3. The energy source that I believe should be used is coal. Although coal is my group, its a very good source because it lasts over 100 years, and nothing stops it from burning and giving energy to the city, houses, buildings, and other things. One thing I don't like about coal is that it pollutes the air. But anyways, its cheap, runs a long time, and nothing stops coal from doing its main job, giving energy.

  4. I think hydro power energy is the most convenient. It is efficient and it is easy to produce energy without polluting the air. The one drawback I think is that it is very expensive. But in the long run this energy will help with pollution problems here on our planet.

  5. If it were up to me to choose an energy resource for Blakeville, I would choose biomass. I would choose biomass for Blakeville's energy supply for the following two reasons. First, I would choose biomass because Blakeville has a large open area for the machines, and some resources wouldn't work in Blakeville because of their sizing issues. Another reason I think biomass is the right source for Blakeville is because Blakeville has plenty of resources to create the energy with. I understand that biomass is expensive, but I think it's worth it to use biomass for Blakeville's main energy resource.

  6. If I were to chose one energy choice for my city it would be solar. Solar is cheap, it creates a lot of energy, and it has energy storage. The only disadvantage is lack of sun. This rarely happens so I doubt it would ever affect my city. Plus it has energy storage if that ever did happen. Solar is a great source of energy.

  7. If I lived in city that had access to all nine types of energy and was in charge of choosing one energy for our city I would choose hydropower. I would choose hydropower because of it’s reliability and renewable ability. Although at first it would be expensive to build, give it some time and you are making a lot of energy unlike fossil fuels where you have to pay for them every time for use. Also the energy does not pollute so my city won’t be contributing to the greenhouse gases predicament. With both these aspects the city will be able to thrive on the energy to keep the economy running, keeping houses warm or cool, and powering the thousands of light bulbs within the city.

  8. Geothermal energy is the best energy source there is. The first reason why it is outstanding is because it has the highest percent of efficiency. Geothermal Energy’s efficiency percentage is 92 - 94%. That is higher than all other eight energy resources! Another reason why geothermal energy is the best is because it’s renewable. Geothermal energy is renewable because heat is constantly being produced inside the earth. Although geothermal energy is wonderful, there a couple cons. Geothermal energy, in extreme cases, can sometimes cause earthquakes. It is also has high starting prices. Other than a couple of things about geothermal energy, it is the best energy resource that should be considered everywhere.

  9. If I had to chose between all of the energy resources I would chose coal because of the options I will show you in this paragraph. One of the reasons why I would pick coal would be the price. If I were in charge I don’t think I would have the budget room to spend too much money on energy. Coal fits that thought because it is one of the cheapest energy sources that you can have on your land. The workers don’t cost very much to get them to mine and get the coal. Also, coal is a very reliable source that you can trust to work all the time around the clock. Coal is also a reliable source because you won’t run out of it until a long time and you can trust coal to give you good energy. You can find coal fairly easy in most locations.. I hope that you realized what the benefits of coal are and why I would use it.

  10. After gaining knowledge about energy resources I have decided that geothermal energy is the energy resource our city will use. Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly. This means it does not harm the environment. Another reason I think geothermal energy is the best is because it is the most efficient fuel source( according to the petroleum group's presentation). Geothermal's efficiency rate is 92%-94% the closest coming to this has a rated 90% efficiency rating. But, geothermal has a heavy starting price. To sum things up, I think geothermal energy is the energy source for our city.

  11. I would choose solar energy for many reasons. One reason to use solar energy is that it does not hurt the environment and all the other resources do. Another reason to use it is that it is renewable and we do not have to worry about the sun blowing up for a very long time. A reason you shouldn't use Solar energy is because if there is a huge storm and the sun isn't out for days then your solar panels will not work as well or it may not even work as well.

  12. If I had to choose between coal, petroleum, Natural gas, nuclear, wind, geothermal, hydropower, solar, and biomass as an energy resource I would chose solar. I would choose solar because it will not hurt people or the environment, it does not cost to much, and it takes very little time to make. It can break with trees, water stones, and sticks and stop working if it is very cloudy for a few days, but if you get one with a battery it will store sunlight to use if it is cloudy and it will recharge when the sun is back out. Soar can be used to work only at night and charge in the day and you use you use regular electricity in the day. Solar also gets rid of your unwanted electric bills. Solar does not need a lot of space. It is easy to bye, attach to our roof and it helps the environment have less pollution, and it does not melt the arctic. For these reasons I would choose solar as a reliable resource.

  13. If I was the towns keeper I would choose the energy source solar power. It helps the world be a greener place by not hurting it. Also solar power is a renewable source so it won't run out for billions of years! but solar does have it's down sides. When it's rainy, snowy, hailing or anything that blocks out the sun the energy might not work as well as it did.

  14. If I had to choose what type of energy for a city, I would choose solar. I would choose solar for three reasons. First, solar energy is a type of energy that uses less energy. This is good because there is plenty of energy left over to use, which will make it last longer. The second reason is because it reduces utility costs. Utility costs are like electricity bills. Using solar energy, you will reduce utility cost because solar energy comes from the sun’s heat. The final reason is because it doesn’t pollute the air. Solar is natural energy that isn’t used with high technology or factories, so it doesn’t pollute the air. But, all energy resources have at least one disadvantage. Solar’s s disadvantage is that you might be without electricity for a couple of days if there isn’t any sunlight. The energy is “sucked” up by solar panels on roofs of houses. So if there isn't any energy, then the solar panels won’t be able to provide enough electricity for the house. Although there are at least one disadvantage for each energy resource, there are way more of advantages.

  15. I would select solar energy. It is very healthy for the environment, it doesn't pollute the air once it’s enabled. Even when it’s dark the panels store sun energy. Solar energy also does not destroy animal habitats unlike other energy resources. One problem with the system is if a storm occurs the panels could get destroyed. If I could chose our energy resource I would chose solar energy.

  16. If I could choose what energy source I wanted to do then I would probably choose wind. I would choose wind because it is cheap it does not pollute and is sustainable and it will run pretty much all of the time. It would be a very good idea if wind was the chosen choice because of these factors. It would be used to power thousands of homes and other things in a safe way that would not hurt the environment. I t is a very efficient way of getting energy too. But two of the negatives is that some birds may be killed by the spinning blades of the wind turbines. Also it has to be put in a remote location which “Blakeville” has. But the positives out number the negatives in this energy source. Nd the negatives are still bad but none the less it is a very good way of getting the energy you need to live happily in your home.

  17. If I want to pick a energy I would pick wind for Three reasons. My first reason is that wind does not pollute the air because it turns a windmill. My second reason is that they are very cheap to build. It only takes about one truck and about a few dozen man to build. My third reason is that it is renewable because the wind moves the giant windmill. The wind does not get captured so it still is in the air. The reason why I picked this energy because it does not harm the environment.

  18. If I lived in an area with nine energy sources then I would uses Biomass for my energy score. There are many negative and positive reasons why. One positive reason is that biomass is renewable. So if this energy source is renewable then I could use it forever. Another positive thing about biomass is that it is made almost everywhere in the world. Now something negative about biomass is that biomass costs allot. Those are a few reasons why I would use biomass.

  19. I would use Biomass for my main energy source because it is the safest for our environment. Biomass is the safest for our environment because it uses the dead animals, dead plants, dirt, and wood chips. Biomass can also change itself to ethanol for cars. Biomass is also because 90% is wood residue. Although Biomass is the safest for our environment it costs a lot of money to build all the materials for the biomass plant. Biomass may not be the most efficient energy but it is very safe our environment. That is why I would choose Biomass as my energy source.

  20. I would use geothermal energy. One reason I would use geothermal energy would be because it is one of the best energy sources. Another reason would be because geothermal is a renewable energy source because once the water is cooled down it goes back into the water and does the process all over again and again. Its good to me that it is renewable because then the energy source is always creating power. One bad thing about geothermal energy is that it cost a lot of money. Other than that and a few other minor details geothermal energy is the best energy source to me.

  21. If I could choose one energy resource I would invest in solar power. Solar power has many benefits. First, it is good for the environment. Solar power doesn’t release smoke. Second, solar is preventing some animals from losing their homes. Third, it will help reduce your utility costs because using solar doesn’t cost any money. If your solar panels produce enough electricity the electricity companies will give you credit (money) for your electricity. Even though solar has disadvantages such as sticks, stones, trees and other things damaging the solar panels I would still choose solar as my energy resource.

  22. If I lived in a place with all the energy resources I would use wind energy. I would use windmills because they produce the cleanest type of energy. Though the windmill requires a lot of energy the wind mill is always spinning and when theirs no wind the windmill holds the energy from when the wind was blowing. All in all I would use the windmill for my energy source.

  23. If I had to make the choice of what energy source to use I would pick biomass/biofuel.
Unlike coal, petroleum, and nuclear biomass burns clean. Biomass is good for the earth because it does not burn bad and that means it’s good for our own lungs too. Biomass would be healthy for everyone. So that means double plus!!!! Another reason would be is that we would only need one machine. So instead of having little wind turbines all along a field or having solar panels on every building we would just get one machine. This would be good because instead of spending tons of money overtime we could just spend money once. No more having bigger taxes for turbines or panels or tons of machines. In the big picture we could save more money. That means instead of spending a little over a long time we could spend a lot just once. Biomass is a good energy source. One bad reason is that the machine would cost a lot of money. Don’t think this is very bad!!! We would only have to raise money once so that beats out buying tons of cheap machines. Biomass is by far the best energy source to use.

  24. If I could choose one energy resource I would choose Biomass. I would choose biomass because it replaces fossil fuels. Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide into the air and that is bad for the environment and humans and other animals. Also, Biomass is renewable. Renewable resources are important because they will not pollute the air and it will not use resources that the human race may need later on. Finally, we will only need one Biomass producer in Blakeville to make all the energy we need in order to survive and to make all the energy we need. Those are a few out of the many reasons why I would choose Biomass over all the other resources.

  25. If I had to choose what kind of energy to run a city, I would choose hydropower. I would choose this because it doesn't pollute the air a lot and one big dam would power the whole city. I would also choose it because if we ever go through a drought, we could use the blocked up water until it rains. although it cost a lot of money, it will pay off in the long run.

  26. If I was in charge of choosing the energy resource used for my area I would pick biomass/biofuel. I think biofuel is the best energy resource to use because it is renewable, does not pollute, and you only need one machine to generate for lots of people. The disadvantage is that it does cost a lot of money, but like i said you only need one. For example if you want to use wind energy you would have to buy lots of windmills. Biomass is good for the ecosystem, its renewable, and you only need one generator to provide for a civilization.

  27. I would choose to use hydro-power because it is a dam that you use to power electricity. The water goes into a pipe. Then, the water powers the generator. Next, They water get turned into electricity. Next, it gets sent through the power lines. Last, all of the extra water goes into a resavore, and you have electricity. It is also a good way to save energy. A negative is that it does cost lots of money to make a hydro-power dam, but other then that it is a really smart and safe resorce to use.

  28. I would chose geothermal because geothermal does not hurt the earths atmosphere. Geothermal dose not hurt the earths atmosphere because it uses hot and cold water to make energy which does not pollute the air. Another reason why I would chose geothermal is because the town only needs one plant to power the whole city. Only having one plant uses less space so we dont have to destroy much land. The last reason would choose geothermal energy is because it is renewable. When the world runs out of gas geothermal energy will still be running and it will never stop running. If I her to choose a energy resource I would choose geothermal.

  29. There are many types of energy that are very good to use. If I had to choose one of the types of energy it would be solar. The sun in the sky 12 hours a day never running out. The sun is so powerful with energy it goes directly into each home. Solar energy doesn't hurt the environment at all. Sometimes when it is cloudy and you can't see the sun it doesn't energies your home. If the clouds are there almost always I wouldn't pick solar energy. But it is very powerful and doesn't hurt the environment at all. I would choose solar energy because it will never go away unless a cloudy day.
